Frequently Asked Questions
We want you to feel informed and comfortable moving forward. If you have any questions not answered here, please reach out!
What is self-rescue survival swimming?
The ability to float and breathe, regardless of the water's depth, for an indefinite period of time.
How is this different from other swim lessons?
The primary focus of Infant Aquatics with Julie is to teach your child to become a productive swimmer or
floater in any depth of water. As a result of their instruction, your child will become a skilled survival
floater or swim-float-swimmer in just WEEKS, NOT YEARS. These skills will greatly increase your child’s
chance of surviving an aquatic accident, even fully-clothed!
Where do you teach?
We teach self-rescue survival swim lessons in Bergen County, NJ. Our pool is located in Paramus.
What will my client learn based on their age?
Children 6-12 months are taught to roll from face down to face up, and float in the water while breathing. Children 1 - 4 will be taught the Swim-Float-Swim sequence, where they will swim with their faces fully-submerged, then roll onto their backs to float and rest whenever they need to breathe. Children 4+ will be taught Swim-Float-Swim, along with an extra helping of fun. More details on swim lessons here.
How are lessons structured?
For children 6-12 months, lessons are M-TH for about 4 weeks (10 minutes each day). For children under 4, lessons are M-TH for about 6 weeks (10 minutes each day). For children over 4, lessons are M-TH for 3-4 weeks (20 minutes each day). After children are skilled, and able to float and breathe in the water, we help them maintain and advance their skills through our Swim Academy. More details on swim lessons here.
What further lessons will my child need?
Once your child has completed the initial survival swim training, they will advance to Swim Academy where they can maintain their skills and progress to the next level.
What if my child cries during lessons?
At first, your child may show some reluctance, as this is a new experience for them. Many children do cry or complain for the first lesson or two. A positive attitude from parents and caregivers will go a long way in reassuring your child. You will see that as your child starts to develop skills, they gain confidence and settle into the routine of lessons. Our priority is to keep your child safe, by teaching them to self-rescue in case of a water emergency, but beyond that, our goal is to help them have fun and love swimming!
What if my child has a medical condition?
If you believe your child has a medical condition that might affect their ability to participate safely in survival swim lessons, please explain this prior to enrolling. If your child has a pre-existing medical condition, written clearance is required from your child's physician.
What if we are late or miss a lesson?
Consistency is very important. It is important to arrive 10-15 minutes before your scheduled time, so that you have enough time to get your child ready for their time slot. If you are late, we will try to fit you in if possible, and/or your lesson may be shortened. If you have a conflict on a certain day, and notify us in advance, we will do everything possible to offer you a make-up lesson time slot. With advance notice, one make up lesson will be offered per session.
What are your rules for eating and drinking before lessons?
Do not feed your child for four hours before lessons. This is for your child's safety, and also to help keep the pool safe and sanitary. Some children swallow air and some water during lessons, causing a child to burp. If there is food in their stomach when this happens, the food may come out of their mouths and go into the water.
Will my child be drown-proof?
No. Nobody can ever drown-proof your child. Be leery of any swimming program that says they can. In saying that, children who possess survival swimming skills have a significantly higher change of surviving an accidental and unsupervised fall into the water. The goal of Infant Aquatics with Julie is to teach your child these life-saving skills and practice them until it becomes second nature for your child.
What about flotation devices and life jackets?
Flotation devices give children a false sense of security in the water, and put their bodies in positions that are not compatible with survival swimming skills. If a child were to fall into the water without the flotation device they are used to, they would not know how to position their body to stay safe. Flotation devices are for children who cannot swim. Children who cannot swim should not be allowed to learn it is "fun" or "safe" to play in the water while relying on a crutch. Life jackets must be worn in a boat or around the water when there is the potential for an accidental submersion. They are not a substitute for the ability to swim, or for adult supervision.
How do I secure a spot?
